Make Your Mark...with Stripes?

In the process of researching hotels in Manhattan, I stumbled upon these stunning photos of The Mark Hotel on Madison Avenue. The black and white striped flooring is insanely stunning.

Sure, this already looks like it just might be the raddest hotel in the universe, but…Check. Out. This. Bathroom. If my bathroom looked like this, I would stay in there all day.

Let a Smile Be Your Umbrella

Oh dear. The weather prediction for the days ahead does not bode well; there's a slight chance of showers on the horizon. Be that as it may, the bright colors and cheerful patterns on these retro-inspired umbrellas from Modcloth should impart an air of cheer, even when skies are grey.

Calder's Quarters

Alexander Calder, one of the last century's most eminent sculptors, is more commonly revered for his whimsical masterpieces than for his interior decorating prowess. Pedro Guerreo's book, Calder at Home: The Joyous Environment, provides readers with a peek into the artist's remarkable living quarters. His inspirational style incorporates sleek, mid-century modern design with exquisitely rustic, organic elements.

These selections from Anthropologie's Craftsman line and Modern Cabin line are reminiscent of Calder's distinctive approach to decorating. Check out the Zag-Shag rug, the Karakoram rug and the Terai Folding Chair.

Tang-tastic

The weather over the past few weeks has certainly been strange—it's cold, it's warm, it's cold again. No wonder people get sick this time of year! Our immune systems are undoubtedly in need of help. Stave off a cold with Tang™, everyone's favorite vitamin c-charged throwback to the days of moon landings and anodized aluminum tumblers.

Here's a great vintage recipe for hot Tang, with an autumnal twist. Be gone, sniffles!

Because chairs get cold, too…

As do lamps. And loveseats. So, the next time the cold autumn air makes you want to stretch a Fair Isle sweater over your favorite armchair, consider Melanie Porter's ingenious, cable-knit creations. Who says modern has to be cold?

Alessi Retrospective

In November, the Philadelphia Museum of Art will be holding an Alessi Kitchenware retrospective. The company, which works with a myriad of designers from various backgrounds, is notorious for incorporating architectural elements into the composition of their products. Don't those kettles look as though they're about to blast off? Alessi has been furnishing tables with nifty, space-age kitchenware for close to a century, and they are still going strong.

Random desires

Not so MCM, but I'm kind of in love with the orange, white & blue tools from Alice Supply Co. (Tip: Open House on 13th has them in stock...I'm just saying...)

What's Gotten Into You, Baxter?

September 16th marked the 50th anniversary of the release of Billy Wilder's iconic, Oscar-winning film, The Apartment. This picture encapsulates the elegance of the early 1960's and bears an aesthetic that, despite the passing of fifty years, still remains contemporary. Wilder's charming tale exemplifies the ambience of the era and imbues the film with an air of sophistication.
